Hiking Tips:
- Collect and pack none-burnable items like tins, bottles, silver foils, plastic, etc out of the park.
- Start early when leaving the camp.
- Proper use of latrine for body waste.
- Respect others in the huts by sharing space stoves, talking quietly and using head phones for your radio.
- Avoid over staying in one camp for extra day unless your itinerary states.
- No burning of firewood
- Maintain your own walking space don’t compete with the porters.
- Always refill your water bottles, you can use purifiers for your water otherwise water is clean and from a natural cooler.
- Maintain your daily pack of rain gears, camera, binoculars, guide book, first aid kits and other small personnel essentials like sun lotion, lunch bites.
- The high altitude and wet cold weather condition of the Rwenzori can affect any traveler be it experienced or inexperienced.
- Hypothermia, dehydration, Altitude sickness, AMS (acute mountain sickness) HAPE (high altitude pulmonary Edema) and HACE (high altitude cerebral Edema) are common to hikers. It’s advisable to start moving to a lower altitude with some porters. Take a lot of fluids if affected.
- Ensure that you have warm sleeping bags clothes and other mountain equipments which can be hired locally at the Rwenzori mountaineering services (RMS).
- Accept the park carrying capacity of 16clients per hut per night
- Rent the necessary climbing equipments for the peaks from RMS stores.
- Make use and respect your guides and porters as they will be your closet family members while on the trek.
- Allow extra days for the peak climbing of Speke margaharrita and baker.
- Tipping of guides and porters is optional however a small thing as a thank you, for the work done is worth it.
- Main peak can be reached from the northern route through Kazingo. However per arrangements need to be done as there are no huts along these routes other than using rock shelters and tents.
- Porters carrying 12.5kg of the client’s luggage each.
